Hi, ESS everyone

This is the announcement of practice to be held on December 19th by Shimon Nakamura
Date: December 19, 2015
Genre: Speech
Title: Make an impromptu speech in English
Description: Dec. 19th will be the penultimate meeting in this year. At any time in ESS, we are requested to make an impromptu speech in English or it is important for us to begin an off-the-cuff English talk. At this time I’m listing as many easy subjects as 100 or more for you to start to speak in no time. The subject will be, for instance, Tokyo Sky Tree, Year-end jumbo lottery, Windows 10, Emperor, garbage selection and the like. I will hand out several sheets of papers showing all the subjects. Let us make a vivid talk. Hoping that you will have a really enjoyable practice at the last meeting but one, I am.

Dear Kyoto NHK ESS members
This is an announcement of the practice on 16 January.
Date: 16 January 2016
Genre: Translation (Japanese to English)
Title: How to translate Japanese to English
We divide our members into 5 or 6 groups.

When we translate a difficult Japanese sentence to English one,
we sometimes recognize the cultural difference between the West and Japan.
Anyhow I prepare 9 sentences.

e.g., 優柔不断な男 ⇒ 決断力のない男 (やさしい日本語に置き換える)
⇒ a man who cannot make a decision by himself.

あなたのその帽子は暖かいですか? ⇒ その帽子はあなたを暖めますか?
⇒ Does your cap keep you warm ? (主語が私ではなく帽子)
